River will suffer more than EVERY BEING IN THE UNIVERSE because she has to kill the Doctor? Not impressed. Why couldn't she have said something along the lines of "The universe needs you! Everything gets effed up when you're not around."

Yes, this one! Precisely. I think it's also because a lot of what happens to River happens off-screen, and someone else pointed out somewhere that a lot of the adventures that happened between River and the Doctor happened somewhere between "The God Complex" and "Closing Time", simply because it was older River on the beach with Amy and Rory, whose diary was synced with the Doctor's.

I did like how the ep pointed out that many people love the Doctor, instead of the whole "he's a monster who must be contained" trope.

Yes, I also liked that one. From "The Pandorica Opens" onwards, we see all this "The Doctor is bad and must be contained" and on the one hand, I think it's a very clever conceit, but on the other hand, I don't watch Doctor Who simply for the cleverness. I think Craig Ferguson said it best when he said the show was "the triumph of intelligence and romance over brute force and cynicism."

I'd like the romance back please, and less of the cynicism.
